The incidence of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is not uniform around the world. It varies from 0.9-4.7 per 100,000 children per year (Zhang et al., 2011).The 1Hematology, Oncology and Pharmacogenetic Engineering Sciences (HOPES) Group, Health Sciences Laboratories, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Department of Zoology, University of the Punjab, 9Centre for Advanced Molecular Biology & National Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology, 10Post Graduate Medical Institute & Institute of Child Health, 12Department of Oncology, Allama Iqbal Medical College and Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan, 13University of Health Sciences, Lahore, 8School of Biological Sciences, University of Sargodha, Sargodha, 14Department of Oncology, Punjab Medical College and Allied Hospital, Faisalabad,15Department of Biotechnology and Informatics, (BUITEMS), Quetta. Bone Density in Pediatric Patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): A Literature Review

Introduction:  Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children and the main form of childhood leukemia (75%). ALL different treatment options have a great impact on children weight and appetite. The improving prognosis for children with cancer refocuses attention to long-term outcomes with an emphasis on quality of life. More survival rate allows researchers to eval...

Pediatric B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia presenting with Paraneoplastic Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a monophasic demyelinating disease most often triggered by infection or immunization, though associations with malignancy and stem cell transplant have been described. We described the case of a four-year-old boy with new-onset neurological symptoms associated with ADEM, acute leukemia, and equivocal evidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. He ...

Prognostically significant fusion oncogenes in Pakistani patients with adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia and their association with disease biology and outcome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Chromosomal abnormalities play an important role in genesis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and have prognostic implications. Five major risk stratifying fusion genes in ALL are BCR-ABL, MLL-AF4, ETV6-RUNX11, E2A-PBX1 and SIL-TAL1. This work aimed to detect common chromosomal translocations and associated fusion oncogenes in adult ALL patients and study their rel...

Evaluation of Immunoglobulin-A Level in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of leukemia among children. Immunoglobulin A is the most numerous immunoglobulin isotype in mucosal secretion.  Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency can increase risk of cancer in patients. Since few studies have been done on relation between serum IgA and ALL, this study was attempted to evaluate serum IgA in ALL patients...

T Regulatory Cells Frequency During Maintenance Phase Chemotherapy for Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: Drugs used in cancer treatment specifically kill T regulatory cells. Objective: To determine different phenotypes of T regulatory cells during the maintenance phase chemotherapy for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Materials: We evaluated the percentages of regulatory T cells by flow cytometry. Soluble CTLA-4 (sCTLA-4) ...

Pneumothorax and Acute Kidney Injury in the Early Phase of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Induction Therapy due to Aspergillus Fumigatus and Pneumocystis Jirovecii Co-Infection: A Case Report

Leukemia is the most common malignancy in children which leads to immunosuppression and predisposes patients to opportunistic infections. We report a 12-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed simultaneous infection with pneumocystis Jirovecii pneumonia and aspergillosis in the induction phase of chemotherapy. The patient developed pulmonary cavitation and pneumothor...
